Now, to be recognized by BAFTA as a Breakthrough Artist, allows me to make the connections and receive the mentoring for which I had always hoped. The dreams of the girl in Ireland are being allowed, endorsed and supported by this great organization.

2022 was truly a breakthrough year for Clare Knight, which saw the global release of Netflix’s Back to the Outback (2022), her first directorial foray. Clare was the first female director of an animated feature for the newly formed Netflix Animation studio. Back to the Outback (2022) is a buddy comedy across Australia with a lovely snake and a pampered koala that unveiled the beauty of the under-appreciated. 

Clare has loved animation since she was a girl in Stillorgan, a suburb of Dublin, Clare loved watching films with her father, a former actor. Clare’s editorial career began almost accidentally as she answered an erroneous ad for “cartoon room” experience. They meant “cutting room”, but Knight impressed them enough that they hired her. Clare has always believed that the answer to the question “Can you…?” is “Yes, I can!” Since then, Clare has been one of the premiere film editors in Animation, and now director.
