Each year BAFTA stages a celebratory television themed photo shoot, featuring stars of the small screen. In 2015 the shoot centered around the concept of ‘Any Place, Any Time’ – the idea that in this day and age, TV programmes are no longer simply consumed on a traditional set but can be watched anywhere on a variety of devices. Hear more from photographer Ian Derry on how he approached the shoot…
“For the Television Awards photo essay in 2015, we wanted to show that you can watch TV pretty much anywhere. Whether you are at home, at work or on the go it’s always available, be it on your phone, tablet, computer or even your television!
“I didn’t just want to shoot people with techie toys though, so sometimes we simply used a light to give you the feel that the subject was watching a screen. We used small light pads to give the feel of the “blue light” emitted and I think overall it works. One of the biggest challenges during the shoot was that the location house had lots of daylight. We had to black out in order to achieve an authentic look. It had loads of great individual rooms though so we were able to get a real connection with reality rather than being in a studio.
“All the artists really embraced the idea. James Nesbitt was great as the picture loosely ties into The Missing and waiting for news. Nikesh Patel is also one of my favourites next to the map of the world.”
