Guillermo del Toro, the man behind the BAFTA-winning Pan’s Labyrinth has opened up about his career in film.

The producer and director is one of Mexico’s most celebrated filmmakers. And since winning international acclaim for Cronos in 1993, he has given us some of the most visceral, powerful and intelligent films in modern cinema. After delivering two instalments each in the Hellboy and Blade series, he went on to direct Pan’s Labyrinth, which won 3 BAFTA Film Awards in 2007 – including the prize for Best Film not in the English Language.

Emotional power of horror movies

de Toro, who is known for his beautiful and visceral cinematography shared how powerful the medium of horror can be.

He said: “There is beauty, poetry and moments of immense power in horror…”

The filmmaker also shared: “I believe that magic exists… the way we see the world we transform it, from the inside out. Every single act – pain, joy – is absolutely our own making.”
