Charlize Theron, The Young Adult and Monster actress and two-times BAFTA nominee has spoken about the intensity of preparation that went into her breakthrough role at a special Life in Pictures event.
Speaking with Francine Stock about her impressive career on 12 November 2011, she said: “Monster was my first experience dealing with something that was so real. I didn’t quite believe I was capable of doing it.”
Making waves playing a real-life serial killer
South African actress Charlize Theron started out as a model before moving to Hollywood to pursue an acting career. In 2003 she made waves playing the real-life serial killer Aileen Wournos in Monster, a role that earned her an Oscar and the first of two BAFTA nominations. She earned her second for 2005’s North Country. She recently starred in Young Adult, written by Juno’s Diablo Cody, and will star in Ridley Scott’s forthcoming film Prometheus.
Speaking to Stock about her career so far Theron shared how her early ballet training has informed her approach to acting. She also discussed her major screen breakthrough Monster, and recounted the extensive preparation and research the role required. She also talked about her own idea of ‘spirituality’, and how travelling and appreciating other cultures plays an integral part.
