Meet
Tommy Jessop
Actor
When someone of the calibre of BAFTA and Oscar winner Mark Rylance calls an actor “phenomenal”, as he did for Tommy in his role as Hamlet, it’s time to sit up and take note.
Charismatic and talented, Tommy made an astonishing debut in the BAFTA-nominated primetime drama Coming Down the Mountain (BBC). This led to star turns in episodes of Casualty and Holby City (both BBC), memorable roles in Monroe (ITV), Doctors (BBC), feature film Day of the Flowers (2012) and award-winning lead roles in his short films: Fighter, Innocence and Down & Out.
In 2019, a guest appearance in season five of Jed Mercurio’s Line of Duty (BBC) was so well received his character, Terry, returned for three more dramatic episodes in season six. He has also worked with Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, appearing in three episodes of their latest WWII mini-series Masters of the Air (Apple TV+).
Recently, Tommy teamed up with his brother, Will Jessop as co creator of an award-winning documentary in which he was both in front of and behind the camera: Tommy Jessop Goes to Hollywood (BBC One) saw the actor pitch his idea for a disabled superhero movie to Tinseltown.
Tommy is co-founder of Blue Apple, a theatre and dance company dedicated to supporting performers with learning difficulties to develop and present high quality productions. Tommy’s turn as Hamlet, the first professional actor with Down’s syndrome to play the role, featured in the Emmy-nominated documentary Growing Up Down’s (BBC), directed by Tommy’s brother, Will.
Tommy branched out into presenting as an investigative reporter for Panorama’s Will the NHS Care for Me? (BBC) and continues to help break down barriers about disability in the screen industries.
As well as developing his superhero film idea further, Tommy has co-written a pilot sitcom with Tim Reid, with Captain Dolly Ltd set to produce. He is also due to start filming Oktobermail in Norway.
Tommy is represented by Conway van Gelder Grant.
