Tom’s breakthrough project is children’s TV series Rafi the Wishing Wizard.
For creator and producer Tom Cousins, making television for young audiences is serious business. He believes the best children’s programmes can enrich young lives, whether that’s by making them laugh, inspiring imaginative play or sparking curiosity about the world around them.
From creating the CBeebies series Kit & Pup to leading the creative and editorial direction of the multi-award-winning JoJo & Gran Gran across three series, Tom has built a career combining original ideas with a strong instinct for character, story and audience connection.
Central to his approach is a belief that stories can be both deeply specific and universally relatable. This is reflected in his breakthrough project, Rafi the Wishing Wizard: an original British animated sitcom set in Manchester that combines contemporary family life with a little bit of magic.
Created, developed and produced by Tom, the series follows seven-year-old Rafi, who can make one wish a day, and her loving, slightly chaotic family, led by her two dads, Jake and Dash. It’s a comedy full of magic and mayhem, but at its heart is the belief that real magic comes from the people around you.
In his own words…
“I’m particularly proud that Rafi is my breakthrough project because, more than anything else, it feels like me. It’s the clearest expression yet of my taste and creative identity.
“I hope there’s a recognisable thread running through all my work: a clear creative vision, inclusive storytelling, and characters and worlds that young audiences really connect with. I want to keep making original series that feel fresh and contemporary, with the potential to become future classics in their own right.”
