Thomas Macnab is a Glasgow-based shooting producer-director who has picked up a wealth of impressive credits since starting his craft a decade ago. Thomas started his TV career later than most, leaving school at 16 with just a handful of grades and started working in a local shipyard. Realising he had little passion for this, Thomas enrolled at college and accrued enough qualifications to make a start in TV.

At the age of 30, he landed a spot in BBC Scotland’s runners pool in 2008. One of his first jobs was working with David Peat, who proved to be something of a mentor, instilling in Thomas the confidence to become a passionate storyteller who seeks out unconventional and compelling stories in the most unlikely of places.
Thomas climbed the ladder quickly and within six years was landing producer-director credits on the likes of Homes Under the Hammer (BBC, 2017-2019), Island Medics (BBC Scotland, 2019) and Chateau DIY (Channel 4, 2018-2021), working with such production houses as Flabbergast TV, Red Sky, Raise the Roof, Lion TV and Firecrest. Most recently, he’s been a shooting producer-director on the first three seasons of Make it at Market (BBC, 2022-2024).

Thomas’ wealth of technical experience is matched by his inherent nous for reading and understanding often delicate and volatile situations, where he invariably needs to adapt quickly to capture the moment with both sensitivity and insight. For instance, his work on Fish Town (BBC Scotland, 2018-2019) showcased his talent for striking up an instant rapport with people in hostile environments, passionately telling the emotional stories of people working in an incredibly dangerous profession.
