Philippa’s breakthrough project is Juice (series 2).
Ever since watching The Fellowship of the Ring as a teenager Philippa has wanted to create otherworldly sets that transport audiences to new places. Citing the film as something that genuinely changed the course of her life, watching the whole world that had been built for the Lord of the Rings trilogy on screen sparked a desire to create transformative, immersive sets of her own.
Since that early inspiration struck Philippa has carved out a career in design working her way up from low-budget projects like music videos, student films and fringe theatre shows to the creative production design work she is known for today. With a knack for navigating budget constraints without ever compromising on design she finds inventive solutions to problems – often building and crafting things in-house using recycled materials.
Now as Production Designer on breakthrough project Juice (series 2) Philippa is showcasing her passion for design, creativity, craftsmanship and sustainability, to a whole new audience. Embracing her creativity and bringing ambitious scripts to life by making everything from a cardboard house and puppets to a giant miniature model and a sofa that could eat people a reality.
In her own words…
“Not being bound by the restrictions of reality was very exciting…I’m very inspired by surrealism and the fantasy genre in general because of the endless design possibilities it presents….
“I drew inspiration from the highly visual nature of the scripts – reading them was a bit like being given a creative playground to run wild in; a unique opportunity to play. Michel Gondry’s work was very inspiring to the project. He often embraces low fi effects; and expertly navigates the blurry line between reality and fantasy.”
