Kate’s breakthrough project is the game Pieced Together.

Growing up playing games with her sister, Kate’s early interest in gaming and love of making creative digital things has led her into a career that she loves. From making games as a teenager, when the Flash games era was at its peak, to trying her hand at websites, animation, art, any tool or software she could get her hands on over the years it feels inevitable that her passion for creating new online worlds would lead to this moment.

Kate’s breakthrough project, the cozy scrapbooking game Pieced Together, tells an emotional story of looking back on childhood friendship. It is the first game released by her studio Glowfrog Games and inspired by her own experiences with mental health and learning the value of slowing down. Having originally started scrapbooking during lockdown as a way to clear out old boxes, Kate says she quickly realised it was great for dealing with anxiety, and now she is bringing this concept to the game space and encouraging people to just enjoy the second to second experience of a relaxing activity.

In her own words…

“It felt like there was a time where a lot of the internet was just people making their passion projects and sharing them for fun, and I think that inspired me more than any one game.

“I like making games that anybody can play, and I think that’s influenced by my time designing games for people who aren’t typical gamers. Designing educational and kids’ games, you really have to avoid making assumptions about how players think and how they’ll interact with your game. It also makes you realise that it doesn’t have to be complex or deeply challenging to be fun – it can be relaxing or thoughtful, even if that doesn’t tick the boxes of a typical gaming experience.”
