Christopher Loat is awarded the BAFTA Reuben Scholarship to support his MFA in Sound Design at the National Film and Television School.
Chris grew up in rural North Devon, where there were few connections to the film industry and limited creative opportunities. He channelled his passion into music, studying acoustic guitar and music production at school and college before going on to complete a degree in Creative Music Technology at the University of Salford.
While living in Manchester, the city’s vibrant creative scene inspired Chris to get involved in a range of student film projects. It was through these experiences that he became fascinated by the role sound plays in shaping a film’s narrative and enhancing its emotional impact.
After graduating with first-class honours, Chris was delighted to secure a place at the National Film and Television School. He believes his background in music, composition and production is helping him develop his skills in sound design, enabling him to create detailed and cohesive soundscapes and mixes.
Chris says: “I feel immensely privileged to have been awarded the BAFTA Scholarship. This financial support will significantly reduce my need to work alongside my full-time studies, allowing me to make the most of the opportunities offered through the Sound Design MFA. I am also excited by the prospect of receiving guidance and advice through the BAFTA mentoring programme, which will help me navigate my way into the industry.”
