EE British Academy Film Awards in 2013 – Winners Press Conference: Animated Film

10 February 2013
BAFTA winners and presenters in the press room backstage at the Royal Opera House for the EE British Academy Film Awards on Sun 10 Feb 2013.

Press conference interview with Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, winners in the Animated Film category at the EE British Academy Film Awards in 2013.

Q.        Please welcome the Bafta winning co-directors of the Best Animated Film, Pixar's Brave, Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman.  Congratulations guys.

MARK ANDREWS:  Thank you.

Q. How does it feel because Pixar has this long and illustrious history of hoovering up every award in its path so is there pressure on you when you start a project like this?

BRENDA CHAPMAN:  We don't think -- I don't -- you don't think about it, you're just making the movie then you go oh, an award.

MARK ANDREWS:  Oh, 13th film, oh yeah, stacked the deck against us, oh yes.

Q. So where are these going to go?  Is there a big shelf in Pixar?

MARK ANDREWS:  There is a big thing but I think we'll keep these at our house.

Q. Any questions for Brenda and Mark?  Thank you.

PRESS:  You touched on it a little bit there but given Pixar's tremendous history for winning these awards, is it special when the films are recognised that you don't let the side down a little bit?

MARK ANDREWS:  No, no I think -- I mean it's -- it's great you know when you do win it because we make these films -- no matter how many times Pixar makes films it's always like when you're starting to make a film it's like making a film for the very first time, you know.  So when it's released and it gets out there and it's building up all the success and then you get nominated for awards, it's like dreams come true.  It's like yes, there's that validation.  The audiences love it but these great academies, our peers, they love it too and that's a fantastic feeling.

Q.        Yes please?

PRESS:  Do you think it has anything to do with the fact that the central character was a female, as a change?

BRENDA CHAPMAN:  I don't know about the words but I know it's gotten a lot of attention because of that and I think because of a lot of women and their daughters and even dads, I remember having a lot of dads coming into my office and closing the door and breaking down in tears after seeing the screenings because they recognise it from their sisters, mothers and daughters and wives.  So for that I'm very grateful and glad that we chose something that touched home that you don't see that much.  So as far as the awards, I don't know.

Q.        Any other questions for Mark or Brenda or and Brenda?

PRESS:  Do you ever do the voices on the Pixar films?

MARK ANDREWS:  Well we have this thing where -- the scratch track before we go out and find our fantastic actors.  I was the scratch voice for King Fergus.  I put on my very bad Scottish accent: "All reet!"  It's pretty good.

BRENDA CHAPMAN:  Billy is better though.

MARK ANDREWS:  Way better.

PRESS:  Did you read at all?

BRENDA CHAPMAN:  No.  I break into a really bad Irish accent when I try to do Scottish, so no.

Q.        Any more questions for Mark and Brenda?  No.  Thank you very much indeed.  Congratulations Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman.  Thank you.
