This evening, BAFTA announced the winners of this year’s British Academy Television Craft Awards, held at the London Hilton on Park Lane. Lenny Henry, Hayley Atwell, Keith Lemon, Kaya Scodelario, Elliott Tittensor, Karen Gillan, June Brown, Omid Djalili and James May were just some of the stars who turned out to honour the talent behind the camera at this year’s glittering ceremony, hosted for the first time by Christine Bleakley.

Channel 4’s biopic of Mo Mowlam was one of the big winners of the night. Mo won the awards for Director: Fiction (Philip Martin), Editing: Fiction (Kristina Hetherington) and Make Up and Hair Design (Chrissie Baker).

Red Riding, the adaptation of David Peace’s trilogy of cult noir novels, was the evening’s other multiple-winner, taking home two awards. Natalie Ward’s Costume Design for the 1974 instalment of the serial was rewarded, and David Higgs won the Photography & Lighting: Fiction award for his work on the 1983 episode.

ITV’s The X Factor was the first winner of the newly created Entertainment Production Team award. The award was judged on craft skills including direction, editing, photography, lighting, sound and production design - beating The Apprentice, Britain’s Got Talent, and Top Gear to the coveted BAFTA mask.

Guy Hibbert won the Writer award for Five Minutes of Heaven. Hibbert’s script was based on a real killing and imagines what might have happened if the murderer came face to face with the victim’s brother thirty years later.

The Director: Factual award was won by Patrick Forbes for The Force, the three-part documentary series following the work of the Hampshire police. Gregor Lyon won the Editing: Factual BAFTA for The Secret Life of the Berlin Wall. The Photography: Factual award went to the team behind Yellowstone (Winter) and Sound: Factual was won by George Foulgham and Lisa Marie McStay for Trawlermen.

Martin Phipps won Original Television Music this year for his score for the epic series Small Island. Phipps also won this award last year, for Wallander. The Wallander sound team – Paul Hamblin, André Schmidt, Catherine Hodgson and Bosse Persson – won the Sound: Fiction award, also for the second year in a row. And this year’s Titles award went to the BBC Winter Olympics – which last year was won by the BBC’s Olympics titles.

This year’s Break-through Talent was won by self-shooting Producer/Director Jessie Versluys for her highly emotive work that includes Katie: My Beautiful Face and The Hospital – A&E.

Almost three decades after the original adaptation of John Wyndham’s iconic novel, the new version of The Day of the Triffids won the Visual Effects BAFTA.

Claire Kenny won the Production Design award for Gracie!, based on the life of Gracie Fields which equalled BBC Four’s ratings record on its transmission in 2009.

The BAFTA for Interactive Creative Contribution was won by Embarrassing Bodies/ Embarrassing Bodies Live. Both sites allow viewers to interact directly with the expertise and information on offer in the Channel 4 series. Presenter Dr Christian Jessen was on hand to congratulate them.

This year’s Special Award to the production team of Coronation Street, was presented by Sarah Lancashire, who became a household name as the Street’s dizzy barmaid Raquel Watts. The Award is in recognition of the outstanding creative teamwork over 50 years, and the role the show has played in developing and nurturing talent behind the camera since its first episode was transmitted live on 9 December 1960. Executive Producer, Kieran Roberts, and long running Street actress, Helen Worth, collected the Award on behalf of the team.

Finally, aspiring young filmmaker, 19 year old Londoner Sam Shetabi won the BBC Blast & BAFTA Screen Skills award, and will now be mentored by BAFTA’s Neville Kidd (2009 BAFTA winner for Photography: Factual for A History Of Scotland). Winning for his role as Director of Photography on his music video, The Cubicle, Sam is currently studying TV Production at Bournemouth University. The new pretender to the throne said: “For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to work in telly – hopefully one day climbing the ladder to Exec Producer and maybe even Channel Controller when I’m old and grey!”
