Glasgow, 23 October: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Scotland has today announced its nominations for the British Academy Scotland Awards 2014, honouring the very best Scottish talent in film, television and video games industries.
Sunshine on Leith leads the way with five nominations (Actor Film, two nominations in Actress Film, Director Film/Television and Feature Film); followed closely by Starred Up with four (Actor Film, Director Film/Television, Feature Film and Writer Film/Television) and Filth which has three nominations (Actor Film, Director Film/Television and Feature Film). James McAvoy, Jack O’Connell and Peter Mullan will battle it out in Actor Film, while Jane Horrocks, Sophie Kennedy Clark and Freya Mavor will compete for Actress Film.
Including Outstanding Contribution awards (to be announced at a later date) nineteen trophies will be handed out at the ceremony, and due to a high number of entries in the acting categories male and female performances have been separated in both film and television categories for the first time.
The Animation category this year sees two previous British Academy New Talent Awards winners in competition with a nominee from last year’s British Academy Scotland Awards. Writer Ainslie Henderson, who worked on Will Anderson’s nominated Monkey Love Experiments, won a New Talent award in 2012, while Ross Hogg of Spectators picked one up earlier this year. Both entries will be up against Sea Front, written by Claire Lamond, who was nominated for a British Academy Scotland Award in 2013.
Previous award winners Mrs Brown’s Boys and Limmy’s Show! Christmas Special! go head to head with newcomer Miller’s Mountain for Comedy/Entertainment Programme. This is also the first year Brian Limond, creator if Limmy’s Show!, has been nominated for Writer Film/Television.
Rockstar Games, winner of a BAFTA Scotland Special Award in 2013, is nominated in Game for Grand Theft Auto V and will be competing against Outplay Entertainment’s Monster Legacy and Firebrand Games’ Solar Flux HD for this year’s title. The British Academy Scotland Awards is one of the biggest nights in Scotland’s calendar and is renowned for welcoming and honouring an impressive line-up of stars.
This year’s ceremony will be hosted by television presenter Hazel Irvine and will take place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow on Sunday 16 November, when the winners will be unveiled at a glittering ceremony. Hazel has an expansive career in anchoring a wealth of BBC sports programmes, such as Sportscene and countless news bulletins. The St Andrews-born presenter became the youngest-ever host of the BBC’s flagship sports programme Grandstand in 1993 before regularly covering major sporting events, including this year’s Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup.
Jude MacLaverty, Director of BAFTA Scotland, said: “We’re thrilled to unveil the nominations and are especially pleased to announce Hazel as this year’s host. The past year has been a very exciting one for Scotland’s moving image industries and the quality of entrants for the awards is consistently high. The rising number of categories being awarded this year is a true testament to the amount of brilliant Scottish talent on our screens today.”
“Hazel has been a permanent fixture in Scotland’s media industry for many years and is passionate about celebrating Scottish talent, so will be a terrific host for this year’s ceremony.”
