Following the ceremony’s postponement earlier this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Stephen returns to present this year’s ceremony, the actor and comedian’s ninth time as host, with nominees invited to accept their awards virtually.
The digital show will be streamed live on the BAFTA YouTube channel, as well as via BAFTA’s Facebook page from 19.00 on Friday 17 July. From the studio, Stephen will steer us through this year’s Awards, joined for a number of comic vignettes by comedian Rachel Parris. Expect music, sketches and a few surprise presenters too – a treat not to be missed.
As always, the ceremony will feature the announcement of winners and their acceptance speeches. The ceremony will include the presentation of the Special Award, one of BAFTA’s highest accolades. Nicky Sargent and Vikki Dunn, joint founding directors of The Farm Group, will be honoured in recognition of their exceptional careers and dedication to the field of television post-production. Viewers can also expect to see a number of surprise celebrity presenters dialling in during the show including Romesh Ranganathan, Richard Ayoade and Jessica Knappett.
Amanda Berry OBE, Chief Executive at BAFTA, said: “The last few months have presented a challenge to the television industry like no other, with many of the talented people who make the shows we love unable to work and worrying about their future. We’re delighted to recognise their achievements, and give those working behind-the-camera a moment in the spotlight to celebrate their incredible artistry. Our nominees represent the very best of British and international talent from across the industry and although the Awards may look different this year, we’re proud to be able to acknowledge and support such fantastic work.”
The Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards (31 July) and the British Academy Television Craft Awards (17 July) champion excellence, and will recognise and celebrate the very best in British television programmes, performances and behind-the-scenes talent from 2019.
