CHARLIE BROOKER:  Blimey, okay.  I did not expect that. This is mildly terrifying. 2016 was a pretty horrible year, I thought.  So to receive an award for summarising it is a bit like being commended for doing a really accurate painting of a haemorrhoid.

(Laughter)

Anyway, I would like to thank — personally I would like to thank my wife, who puts up with this. This is the team who make the show.  It is a huge team effort, so everybody chips in.

(Applause)

And I would like to thank Shane and Alex at the BBC. Everybody here, literally everybody works much harder than I do.  And hopefully, by the time we get to 2017 wipe, we will have a less awful year to summarise. This is really awful.  You are all staring at me. Stop judging me, monsters!

Thank you very much.

(Applause)
