London, Wednesday 3 September: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has today announced that Ray Winstone, the BAFTA-nominated and Emmy-winning actor, will discuss his craft and career at a special ‘BAFTA A Life in Pictures’ event at BAFTA’s headquarters, 195 Piccadilly in London, on Sunday 5 October.
‘BAFTA A Life in Pictures’ is a long-running series of onstage interviews in which some of the film world’s leading talent share insights into the experiences that helped them hone and develop their craft. The series has hosted such figures as Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Jim Broadbent, Dustin Hoffman, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Kenneth Branagh and Helen Mirren.
Ray Winstone received his first BAFTA nomination – Most Promising Newcomer – in 1980 for his theatrical film debut in That Summer!. In the intervening decades he has starred in films spanning a range of genres: Hollywood blockbusters such as The Departed, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, Noah and Beowolf (in which he played the eponymous lead role); British cult classics including Quadrophenia, Nil By Mouth (for which he received his second BAFTA nomination – Actor in a Leading Role – in 1998), The War Zone and Sexy Beast; and he has voiced characters in family favourites The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Rango. These roles have seen Winstone work with a host of acclaimed directors including Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Anthony Minghella and Ken Loach.
Winstone first made an impact in 1977 playing a young offender in the controversial television drama Scum. He has appeared in a multitude of high-end British television dramas and popular series over the years, including the BAFTA-winning Great Expectations, Emmy-winning Henry VIII and BAFTA-nominated Births, Marriages and Deaths. In 2006 he gained an Emmy for Best Performance for his lead role in ITV’s Vincent.
Ray Winstone’s forthcoming roles include The Gunman, alongside Idris Elba and Sean Penn, and The Legend of Barney Thomson, co-starring with Robert Carlyle and Emma Thompson.
