London, Tuesday 18 June: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) alongside First News is calling for entries for its annual BAFTA Kids Young Presenter competition, now in its fourth year, which aims to find an exciting new on-screen star aged between seven and 14.
The winner of this year’s BAFTA Kids Young Presenter competition will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interview stars on the red carpet at the British Academy Children’s Awards in December, present an award at the ceremony, and present a feature on the popular Sky News TV show, FYI.
Previous winners have gone on to interview A-list stars at various BAFTA events, including Tom Hiddleston and BAFTA President HRH The Duke of Cambridge, as well as presenting on popular children’s television shows and at events around the world.
Daniel McGovern, winner of the BAFTA Kids Young Presenter competition in 2018, said of his experience: “When I won the competition it felt like the world stopped for a minute, I couldn’t believe it had happened to me. I have had the most amazing year, I never thought I would meet the people I have met, or go to the places I have been. The highlights have to be presenting an actual BAFTA at the Children’s Awards and interviewing my heroes Eddie Redmayne and Warwick Davis. I can’t wait to see who wins this year‘s competition, good luck everyone!”
To enter the 2019 competition, children are invited to create and submit a short video, no longer than two minutes, responding to the theme ‘I care about…’, telling viewers one thing they care about and why. For example, “I care about climate change/ my community/ my pet/ my school/ mental health.” Entrants should introduce themselves, their interviewees if they have any, say what they care about, and start or finish their video with the line: “Reporting for BAFTA Kids.”
The deadline for entries is Friday 6 September 18.00 BST. All entries will be viewed and shortlisted by the BAFTA Kids team, before being judged by a celebrity jury. A final casting session takes place in October with all the finalists, where, for the very first time, they will participate in a masterclass with professional presenters.
Nicky Cox, Editor-in-Chief at First News and Executive Producer at Sky News FYI, who will also sit on the jury for the competition, said: ‘We are delighted to be working with BAFTA to find the very best young presenting talent from across the UK. I cannot wait to watch the entries to hear what young people care about most, and am excited to work with the jury in selecting the winner this year. Good luck to all the entrants.”
This year, Sky News FYI will also offer the opportunity for the winner to present a feature for the popular children’s TV show, which launched in 2017, with previous BAFTA Kids Young Presenter winner Braydon Brent, a regular contributor.
