A German director, producer and writer, who was nominated for a BAFTA and two Academy Awards in 1983 for his claustrophobic World War II submarine thriller, Das Boot (The Boat, 1981). After a move to Hollywood, his first English language film was The NeverEnding Story (1984), followed by Enemy Mine (1985), In the Line of Fire (1993), Outbreak (1995), Air Force One (1997), The Perfect Storm (2000), Troy (2004) and the Poseidon remake (2006). His producer credits also include Instinct and Bicentennial Man (both 1999).
