An American writer who was blacklisted in Hollywood in the 1950s following the HUAC hearings, Bernstein continued to write under a psuedonym for the next decade and wrote The Front (1976) based on the experience. His other credits included Fail-Safe (1964) and Semi-Tough (1977), and he received a BAFTA nomination for Yanks (1979).
