A British playwright, journalist and novelist, Townsend’s best-known works were her series of novels featuring the character of Adrian Mole which were adapted for the TV series The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾ (1985-1987) and Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years (2001). The stories were also adapted for radio and the West End.
