Stephen Sondheim

An American composer and lyricist, who is perhaps more famous for musical theatre, although many of his works have been adapted for the big screen. He will be best known to film fans as the lyricist for such hits as West Side Story (1961, 2021), Gypsy (1962) and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2001, 2007) and original songwriter for Dick Tracy (1990), the latter winning him an Oscar for Original Song, as well as two Golden Globe nominations. He won eight Grammys altogether, earning a further 10 nominations, with many of his songs featuring in a great number of films and television series over the years. He has two film credits as composer, for Stavinsky (1974) and Reds (1981).
