An American animator, writer and producer behind the global sensation SpongeBob SquarePants (1999-2018), Hillenburg was fascinated with the ocean and created the show after deciding to animate a comic he’d drawn a decade earlier. Hillenburg directed the character’s big screen debut The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) before stepping back from the series into an advisory role.
