A South African playwright and screenwriter who came to Britain in 1951 to work in the theatre, Harwood began his screen career in the 1960s penning television plays for the BBC and ITV. He received BAFTA nominations for The Dresser (1983), The Browning Version (1994) and The Pianist (2002), and won for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007).
