An American screenwriter who was best known for his debut feature, Getchell won a BAFTA for writing Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974) and later created its sitcom spinoff. His other notable work included Bound for Glory (1976), Mommie Dearest (1981) and This Boy’s Life (1993).
