An American director, writer and producer who came to prominence in the 1960s and '70s with his satirical and irreverent comedies. After a series of underground hits, the first of his works to break into the mainstream was Putney Swope (1969), followed by Pound (1970), which featured the screen debut of his namesake son. Elsewhere, Downey also occasionally acted, including turns in Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999) and Tower Heist (2011).
