An American director and producer of both film and television, Richard Donner was a chameleon of genre. It’s hard to imagine that the man who directed family adventure The Goonies (1985) also made the four Lethal Weapon action films (1987-1998), comedy Scrooged (1988), Western Maverick (1994), fantasy Ladyhawke (1985) or classic horror The Omen (1976). While never nominated himself, Donner’s magnum opus, Superman (1978), did earn its special effects team the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award and actor Christopher Reeve the Most Promising Newcomer BAFTA.
