A prolific British filmmaker who directed more than 100 documentary shorts between 1942-1983, Pickering was one of the biggest contributors of films to the National Coal Board. His work included films such as The Island (1952) and Miners (1976), and was typified by a respectful depiction of Britain’s postwar industrial tradition.
