A British commentator known as the ‘voice of golf’, Alliss had enjoyed a successful career as a professional golfer before retiring following the 1969 Ryder Cup. He began broadcasting as an apprentice in 1961 and by 1978 was the BBC’s chief golf commentator, and also notably presented the golf-cum-chat show Around With Alliss (1979-1986).
