A director and former actor active in theatre, Garland secured an early career boost as a researcher on Huw Wheldon’s arts series Monitor. He subsequently directed both drama and documentary for television, winning a BAFTA nomination for The Snow Goose (1971) and also directing the feature A Doll’s House (1973).
