An actress adept at conveying both toughness and warmth, Neal starred in The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) and won BAFTAs for Hud (1963) and In Harm’s Way (1965). After a remarkable recovery from a series of debilitating strokes she enjoyed further success with The Subject Was Roses (1968).
