A dependable character actor who could play integrity or menace, Hingle was familiar for playing Commissioner Gordon in four movies beginning with Tim Burton’s Batman (1989). He was equally convincing as a menacing crime boss in The Grifters (1990), with other films including Nevada Smith (1966) and Norma Rae (1979).
