Better known for her stage work early in her career, American actress Olympia Dukakis did not find prominence on screen until her 50s, with an Oscar and Golden Globe-winning and BAFTA-nominated turn in Moonstruck (1987). Other notable film roles included Steel Magnolias (1989), Look Who’s Talking and its sequel (1989, 1990), Mighty Aphrodite and Mr Holland’s Opus (both 1995). Her television work saw her BAFTA-nominated again for Tales of the City (1993) and three times for an Emmy (Lucky Day, 1991; More Tales of the City, 1998; and Joan of Arc, 1999).
