A prolific Japanese director, editor and writer who came to prominence with his early feature House (1977), Obayashi’s horror comedy followed a group of schoolgirls who are devoured by a country home. His distinct and often surreal work also included The Discarnates (1988), Sada (1998) and Hanagatami (2017).
