An intense actor who built his reputation on stage, Scots born Williamson made occasional films appearances that demonstrated his considerable powers. These include The Bofors Gun (1968), Inadmissible Evidence (1968), The Reckoning (1969), Hamlet (1969), The Seven-Per-Cent Solution (1976), Robin and Marian (1976), The Human Factor (1979) and Excalibur (1981).
