A Brazilian director who alongside Ruy Guerra and Glauber Rocha formed the Cinema Novo co-operative, Pereira dos Santos and his compatriots kickstarted political, independent filmmaking in Brazil. His work included Rio 40 Degrees (1955), Barren Lives (1963) and The Alienist (1970) and The Amulet of Ogum (1974).
