Murray Melvin

A British actor and theatre director, who was nominated for a BAFTA for his film debut in A Taste of Honey (1961), adapted from the play that helped launch Murray Melvin’s acting career in 1958. The role also won him the Best Actor award at Cannes. Melvin made more than 100 screen appearances, including in such films as Alfie (1966), The Devils, The Boy Friend (both 1971), A Day in the Death of Joe Egg (1972), Barry Lyndon (1975), Shout at the Devil (1976), Little Dorrit (1988), The Krays (1990) and The Phantom of the Opera (2004). His long list of television credits included The Avengers (1961), The Tyrant King (1968), Christopher Columbus (1985), Jonathan Creek (1998), David Copperfield (2000), Starhunter (2000-2003) and Torchwood (2007). Melvin was also heavily involved with the Theatre Royal, becoming a member of its board (1991-2011) and serving as its archivist.
