A British television producer who notably created the BBC’s The Old Grey Whistle Test (1971-1988), Appleton’s show provided a platform for the alternative rock culture that didn’t belong on Top of the Pops. He graduated from producer to editor of the show, and later supervised the televising of Live Aid from Wembley Stadium in 1985.
