A British television director whose career began as an actor with the Royal Shakespeare company, Hayes began directing with An Age of Kings (1960) and A For Andromeda (1961). He notably directed 14 episodes of Doctor Who (1978-1979) with Tom Baker, and went on to read BBC World Service news from 1986 to 1994.
