An American writer and director best known for The Deer Hunter (1978), Cimino won a pair of Oscars for producing and directing the film and also received a BAFTA nomination for his direction. His notorious flop Heaven’s Gate (1980) came next and somewhat derailed his career, but has been critically reappraised in later years.
