Originally from Barbados but raised in the UK, Menelik Shabazz was a trailblazing filmmaker. His first feature, Burning an Illusion (1981), was only the second film to be made by a black director in the UK. He followed this with feature-length documentaries Time and Judgement (1988), The Story of Lovers Rock (2011), Looking for Love (2015) and Pharaohs Unveiled (2019). He also co-founded Black Filmmaker Magazine (bfm) in 1998 to highlight the next generation of talent.
