John Whitney CBE

Producer, Executive

A British television producer and broadcasting executive, who was widely considered a pioneer of commercial radio and independent television drama. Among John Whitney’s writer-producer credits were The Informer (1966-1967), Upstairs, Downstairs (1971-1975, 2010-2012) and Danger UXB (1979). He also served as Capital Radio’s first managing director (1973-1982), director general of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) (1982-1989) and RADA’s chair (2003-2007). He was appointed CBE in 2008.
