A British director who began his career at the BBC in 1958 on a studio manager training course, Phillips gained experience as a floor manager at ATV before graduating to directing. He showed versatility moving from documentaries to dramas and operas to soap operas, with credits including The Tailor of Gloucester (1989)and Coronation Street (1982-2001).
