A Czech actor and director best known for Closely Observed Trains (1966), Menzel directed the coming-of-age film which received a Best Film BAFTA nomination and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. His further work included Larks on a String (1969), My Sweet Little Village (1985) and I Served the King of England (2006).
