Jerry Springer

Broadcaster, Journalist, Actor
13 February 1944 to 27 April 2023

An American broadcaster, who was born in the UK and went on to produce and front one of the most popular daytime talk shows in the US, The Jerry Springer Show (1991-2018). The show ran for almost 5,000 episodes across 27 seasons and had its fair share of critics due to its often confrontational content. It started out very differently, as a political commentary programme, as Springer had been involved in politics since earning a BA in political science and a law degree in the late 1960s. In the UK, ITV made its own version of the show with Springer at the helm, Jerry Springer UK (1999), followed by The Springer Show (2005). After the main show ended, Springer then created Judge Jerry (2019-2022). Previously, he had been host of America’s Got Talent (2007-2008) and US quiz show Baggage (2010-2015). Springer and his show were given further exposure when Richard Thomas and Stewart Lee wrote the multi-Oliver award-winning musical, Jerry Springer: The Opera, in 2003.
