One of France’s most highly regarded actors, Jean-Paul Belmondo played an integral part in the French New Wave in such films as À bout de souffle (aka Breathless) (1960). He was twice nominated for a BAFTA, for Léon Morin, prêtre (1961) and Pierrot le Fou (1965). Other notable works in a career spanning more than 50 years included À double tour (1959), Un singe en hiver (1962), Up to His Ears (1966), Mississippi Mermaid (1969) and the 1995 version of Les misérables.
