A French screenwriter, actor and director, who was a frequent collaborator with Luis Buñuel, including on Diary of a Chambermaid (1964), Belle de Jour (1967) and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), the latter earning him a BAFTA for Screenplay with Buñuel. His second BAFTA came in 1989 for The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988), for his script with Philip Kaufman. He was nominated twice more, for Cyrano De Bergerac (1990) and Taking Off (1971), and was presented with an honorary Oscar in 2015.
