A former print journalist, Haworth worked as a producer on news programmes such as Tonight and Panorama in the 1960s. But it was the documentary Fred Dibnah: Steeplejack (1979) that proved to be his most enduring legacy, winning him a BAFTA and making the ebullient Bolton-born Dibnah a household name.
