A British actor, who is best known for his performances in If... (1968) on film and Mapp & Lucia (1985-1986) for television. Chater left the British Army in 1946, having seen active service in India and Burma, and started acting on stage, making his West End debut in 1951. Notable big screen credits included 10 Rillington Place (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975) and Gandhi (1982). On television, he featured in a variety of dramas and comedies, including Motive for Murder (1957), Callan (1970-1972), Blott on the Landscape (1985) and various Harry Enfield sketches.
