A BAFTA nominee for A Passage To India (1984), Day had served as camera operator on David Lean's three previous epics stretching back to Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Starting out as a clapper loader during the war, he rose through the ranks and eventually directed films including Green Ice (1981).
