A British broadcaster, who became a sports commentator after a successful career playing rugby union for Pontypool RFC and Wales, both of which he captained, as well as for the Barbarians and British and Irish Lions. After retiring from the sport in 1985, Butler started writing for the Guardian and Observer before landing a commentary job with the BBC. Although favoured as a rugby commentator, he also covered other sports, including the Olympics and the World’s Strongest Man competitions, and also presented such documentary shows as Welsh Towns (2015) and Hidden Histories (2014).
